Thankful

Sitting here in the internet cafe, thinking about what to title this blog and the word that came to my mind is Thankful. I am so Thankful to be here in Peru. There are many reasons I am so Thankful.

First, it is awesome to be able to be used by God. Lately, I have seen in just little ways how we can be used by God daily whether we are in a foreign country serving Him or at home serving Him he always places opportunities and people in our lives to show His love. Many of you know that I am a pretty extroverted person, I love talking to people and building relationships. Latley it has been a bit difficult here in Peru, since my Spanish is not the best. I was getting a little discouraged thinking that people were not getting to know me because of the language barrior. Although, I realized that just through a simple smile, saying ¨hola¨ or even trying to teach English to a class full of people who speak very little God uses it and I am so thankful. Thankful that He uses me, even though I have flaws and imperfections. What a beautiful picture of His love.

Second, I am so thankful for the relationships I have here in Peru and at home. There is nothing like being able to spill your heart out to the people who love you most and know that they love you. I am thankful for the bond that the Lord has placed with me, Maggie, and Andrea and what an amazing support system they are to me. I am thankful for Pastor Ruban and his family and their continued friendship here in Peru. I am thankful for the Grady´s for asking for Summer Missionaries through the BCM and thier support and mentorship here in Peru. I am thankful for the relationships we have begun building here and I am thankful from my family and friends at home for their encouragment of me being here. I am thankful.

Third, I am so thankful that the Lord has blessed with a life full of experiences to serve him and have fun! SO, with that being said and my little spill on thankfulness here is an update of the big happenings of this week---

This week we have continued our ESL classes. They are going well and the students really seem to enjoy it. The kids class has been a challenge but we have come to learn a lot about ministering during this class. We played a game on Thursday with them where they had to get the flash card right in order to try and shoot a basket for their team and they really enjoyed it and it seemed to help them with their English. We are praying that they begin to want to know more about the Lord through the Bible stories we share at the end of class.

The Adult ESL class is a blast. They all love learning English and we can tell they really want to be in class. We played the same game with them to review this week and had a great time! They are quite competitive, especially since they were playing for a prize (American candy). I can´t help but smile and laugh through out the adult class it is so fun to teach! They all are also very into hearing the Bible story at the end of class and all love sharing their two cents on what the liked about the story. Also, on Saturday we played volleyball with about 8 people from our adult ESL class. Let´s just say Peruvians are amazing at volleyball and me, Maggie and Andrea not so much. We had a blast though and it was great to hangout with them outside of class. Pray that these relationships continue to build and that we are able to share more with these students!

One relationship that is really sparking is one with a girl from our ESL class Rosmmy. She has grown quite fond of us enough to buy us some leg warmers in Juilica when she went to get some items for her mom´s store here in Huancane. She is super sweet and said she had been saving her money to buy them for us! We invited her over for supper that night, which was homemade pizza. The pizza turned out amazing and Rosmmy said she had been waiting 2 years to eat pizza again! It was great to be able to just hangout with her and bless her as she had blessed us!

On Wednesday, Andrea and I traveled to Moho with John (the full time missionary here) and Conima to check in on the other collegiate missions teams that are out there. It was about an hour ride out to Moho and John took us the scenic way. It was curvy and bumpy but the view was absoultley beautiful! We got to see Lake Titicaca from all different view points and took some awesome pictures! God´s creation here in Peru is so unbeliveable. The lake seems to go on forever and it is so blue. In the word´s of Andrea, ¨It should not be called Lake Titicaca but an Ocean¨. We also really enjoyed seeing the team in Moho and the little town of Moho. The Moho team gave us a tour and we got to see where they are doing ministry. We had some fun playing on a playground and getting some pictures with some pretty cool Llmas! We also went out to Conima which is about another 20 minutes from Moho. The Conima team is doing great and I can´t wait to see what God does there. Conima is beautiful, it is right on Lake Titicaca, so let´s just say the Conima team gets a pretty awesome view of the Lake everyday! We are planing another trip to Moho and Conima again, since Maggie was a little sick and didn´t get to go with us! We missed her and we felt like a part of us was missing since she was unable to come.

Upon arriving back in Huancane on Wednesday night, we ate a quick dinner and then went to the church service across town. Pastor Ruban asked me to share the Genesis 3story again about Adam and Eve and the fall. The service went well and it was great to be in the company of believers. I always enjoy singing the Spanish worship songs! After church, we hung out more with Ruban and his family. It was a special custom in town that night to burn a fire outside your house because it is supposably the coldest day of the year. So Ruban, burned some wood right outside his door and Louisa made us chocalatada (homemade hot chocolate). It is so good we have had it 2 more times since Wednesday haha. It was a fun night to just hangout and spend with them.

Friday, the Moho team came to get some rest in Huancane. It was a treat to see them 2 times in one week. We got to enjoy their company swap stories about our Peruivan lives. John even set up the DVD player in our house and we got to watch the Blind Side which was so fun. It was nice to watch something in English and feel a little at home. Saturday, we went to Juilica with the Moho team and picked up some grocheries that we needed from the ¨American like¨grochery store. We also went to Topac which is like a big market in Juilica. The Moho team bought some stuff there and then we headed back. We watched the USA vs. Ghana soccer game and ate some lunch. We were all very sad to see the US loose especially in overtime.
Maggie, Andrea, and I also tried to make our homemade pizza for the Moho team as a special treat. Let´s just say for some reason our whole doubling the recipe didn´t really work out and we were pretty sad about that too. We can´t seem to figure out what went wrong but the pizza was pretty doughy to say the least no matter how long we cooked it. We wished it would have turned out like it did for us the first time we made it when we made it for Rosmmy but for some reason something went wrong. It was our first cooking fail in Peru and hopefully the last. haha. Dough just doesn´t cook the same here in the high altitude, and I guess since we made more then the first time something just didn´t work out right. But other than that our cooking has been fabulous here and we have enjoyed our meals that we make from scratch! We then helped the Moho team get a bus back to Moho this morning and said goodbye until hopefully the fourth of July we will get to see them again.

Well that is pretty much the highlights of the week. Thank you so much for your prayers and support! I love y´all so much!

HH CREW

Well, it now has been 3 weeks in Peru! I called this blog post the HH CREW because that is what Maggie, Andrea and me have named ourselves. We are called the HH CREW because we live in the Huancane House. We are getting very settled into life here. We get up early and go to bed fairly early just like the people here in Huancane. We clean our house on Saturdays, because nothing in town is open and on Sundays we go out into the market get some things that we need. The town is crazy on Sundays. We make all home made meals for dinner. The majority of the time we buy a full chicken and have to cut the breast off of it. We go out in the morning and buy the food we will need for that day. We get fresh vegies everyday and disinfect them and they are delicious! Life here is so simple and I love it!

We started our ESL classes this week and they were a big success! Thank you for the prayers! We had more the enough people sign up and even had to turn people away because they are full! We have started building relationships with the people here and are growing pretty attached already. We all absoultely adore Pastor Ruban and his family. They are a big encouragement to us and we try to be to them as well.
On Monday, Pastor Ruban´s wife Louisa took us to Juilica which an hour bus ride from Huancane just to show us around and take us shopping. She is super sweet. On Friday we had their family over dinner and cooked a home made chicken recipe it was so good and the company was so fun!

A team of college students from Texas also arrived this week and had their orientation here in Huancane. It is 5 girls and 1 boy. They will be living and working in the town of Conima which is about an hour away from here. They are really sweet and I know God is really going to work in them. The HH CREW was rather brave with the Conima team and decided to hike the mountain again with them on Thursday. We still can´t believe that we did it again. This time though we decided to do it as a team and help each when we needed encouragement. It was a great team bonding experience and we were so thrilled when we reached the top together!! We took some awesome team pics again and learned the importance of having people to lean on. God sure has taught us a lot through that mountain the two times we have hiked it. This time was not nearly as bad as the first since we had adjusted to the altitude.

We also have been building a relationship with a 17 year old girl named Rosmmy. We are praying for opened doors with her and that we also can get to know other girls her age and hopefully start a Bible Storying group with some girls.

We also talked to Sonia today about starting a women´s ministry outreach group at the church where we can do cooking lessons! So please be praying for that as well.

Life here in Huancane, Peru is awesome and the roomies and I are loving it! Thanks for all your prayers and support! I love you all so much!

2 Weeks Tomorrow

2 weeks tomorrow since I left the states for Peru. I am so grateful that God has brought me here and provided me with the opportunity to serve him here. This week has been quite eventful.

Andrea, Maggie and I started off the week by advertising for our ESL classes. We passed on flyers in the Sunday Market which is when everyone from Huancane and surrounding towns come out to sale things. The town is crazy but full of so much life on Sundays!

Monday we spent the morning with the missionary, Sonia, and her boys Jacob and Samuel. Jacob is almost 2 and Samuel is 3 and a half and he goes to preschool here in Huancane 3 times a week and Sonia also homes schools him. All of the schools had a parade on Monday because it was Flag Day in Peru. It was really intersting to see how much the people love parades here. We spent the afternoon studying our Spanish stories.

Tuesday we played basketball with some local boys and were able to start building a relationship with them. It was so fun even though I am not the best basketball player we were able to hang out with them and have a blast.

Wednesday we helped Sonia prepare for the medical team to arrive. We helped her make 50 sandwhiches and the med team was very appreciative to have American like lunches on Thursday and Friday.

Thursday we helped with the med clinic in a town called Patascachi. In January Patascachi was covered in water and over 500 families lost everything in a flood. So we had a med clinic for them with a team in Georgia. I worked in the eye clinic yesterday, and many of the people just wanted glasses just because, many of them had perfect eyes but just thought the glasses were cool and well probably never had glasses before so they wanted them really bad. We gave out tons of sunglasses to the people who didn´t need eye glasses but then when we ran out of those the people just wanted real eye glasses even if they didn´t need them. So needless to say it became a little crazy near the end of the day. We felt as though many of them were pertending to have eye problems just to get some glasses. We tried to explain to them that it would make their eyes worse but they didn´t understand. I couldn´t blame them for wanted the glasses since they thought they were neat and never had them before. So, I came to the conclusion the best way to show them Christ´s love was to just give them to them anyway. SO be praying they end up not liking the glasses so their eyes don´t go bad.

Today, we ran out of glasses so I just hung out with the kids and played with them. I played some soccer with them and also taught a cute group of little girls how to play frisbee. I am glad that I was able to be used by God even though I don´t have medical skills.

Prayer Request--
-The med team leaves tomorrow to go back to GA
-ESL class sign ups tomorrow
-Memeorizes Spanish Bible Story

I love you so much!

The Hike up The GIANT MOUNTAIN

This is from yesterday...

Today, we woke up at 4am to go climb the tallest mountain in Huancane. We wanted to see the sun rise so we set out! It was dark and cold as we began our ascent. As we just started the altitude really began to hit me. My heart was pounding and would not stop racing. It was very hard to breath. The locals walk it to pray to the cross. There are stations of the cross although the people here claim to be Catholic but they worship the actual cross and other idols. They don't know the truth so they hike the mountain to try and gain blessings. As I continued to hike I wondered if I would make it up to the top. It was a struggle rocks were about half the size of me and I could not stop breathing heavy. As I hiked I began to talk to God. I knew it was only his strength and encouragement that would get me up the mountain. I had no one else to lean on because all of us started hiking the mountain at our own pace. So it was just me and Jesus on the way up. He kept telling me that I could do all things through him, the son by Third Day, Mountain of God and kept praying through my head "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". This hike was the hardest thing I have ever done physically. Yet, it was one of the best times I have ever had with my Lord and Savior. Feeling his strength, being in his creation was amazing. I finally reached the top and the view was unbelievable. There was a huge white cross at the top overlooking the mountains. You could see Lake Titicaca the biggest Lake in Peru and the city of Huancane. The surrounding mountains, lake, and city were beautiful. We prayed at the top for the people of Huancane as a group. The hike was hard and a struggle although as John the missionary here said that is was a good analogy to our summer and how it is going to be hard and a struggle at times but what the Lord does through us is going to be so worth it. It was a life changing experience hiking the Huancane Mountain.

After hiking we had simple church where 4 team members shared their testimonies. It was beautiful to see how the Lord has moved in their lives and it brought tears to my eyes. God is really uniting us and making us a family and I am so grateful.

WE then had to say goodbye to Tim, Mindy, Jessica, and Jeremy as they left for Moho. We really are going to miss them and will be praying for their work in Moho.

We then had some lunch and then took a nap because we were exhausted from the hike.

Then we met with Sonia and figured out some things for our ESL classes. We will be teaching a kids class and young adult class twice a week as well as a VBS at the preschool here.

Here are some prayer request:
-Building meaningful relationships with people here in Huancane
-ESL classes and that people will sign up
-VBS at the preschool
-Medical Clinic (starts Sun in Moho and goes to Tues and then we will help with one here in Huancane Thursday and Friday next week)
-Language Barrior- I will be telling Bible stories in Spanish and also just talking with people in general here in Spanish

Thanks so much for the prayers! I love you all!!

It's been an eventful 2 days in Peru

I am going to be posting my journal from yesterday and then type a little bit about our adventure hike up the mountain after my journal. It is long because so much has happened and I haven't really had much time to post.

Journal from 6/2/2010

What an awesome day of the Lord. Like everyday I awoke and had my quiet time with the Lord. (here in Huancane I do it still under the covers because it is very cold! It was an awesome time of communion with him. Tim, one of the guys that is also a GA summer missionary play for us a song he wrote out of Psalm 46. So this morning when I did my devotional book the passage was Psalm 46. So far in Peru, God has continued to show me the importance of being still and knowing HE IS GOD. After an awesome quiet time, I ate breakfast with Andrea, Maggie, Tim and Mindy. Andrea made eggs for us all and if any of you know me well you know I am not big on eggs. Maybe it's because I ate them at camp in Middle School and never once wanted them again. But I decided since Andrea had made them I should definitely give them a try. I also told myself that since I was in Peru I was going to eat to bring Glory to God. haha. That means even if I don't like it I am going to suck it up and eat. (Don't worry Mom I am not going to eat anything that is going to make me really sick) Anyways, I ate the eggs and actually really liked them! Hooray Kayla likes scrabbled eggs.

After breakfast we had our "simple church" time with 6 GA summer missionaries and Jeremy a student from Iowa who is studying at a bible school in Lima. Jeremy played several worship songs some in Spanish and some in English. We then did a Bible Storying lead by Sonia (IMB missionary). She acted it out the story from Acts 16:16-40. She acts the story out for us and then we try and repeat it back. She then acts it out again and then we try to repeat. We do this about 4 or 5 times until we all know it well and then 1 person other than Sonia tells it by them self. Maggie did it today and did an awesome job. After this we then answer questions such as what did you like about the story? What does this story tells us about God? This is a sweet time to see what God shows everyone and speaks to them through his word. This storying technique is one that we all are going to be trying to do among the Amarya people this summer.

After story telling we went on a trip to Julica. John and Sonia and their 2 boys drove their truck. We students took a van taxi to Julica. We paid 2.50 sols very cheep about 60 cents for an hour ride to Juilica. It sure was an experience since the van was packed with locals as well. We kept each other company through and also enjoyed the beautiful Mountain scenes as we drove so it went by quickly. Once in Juilica, we had to get 2 setter bike taxis to take us to the Plaza to meet John and Sonia. These also cost 2.50 sols. It was very fun to ride on the bicycle setter with Maggie.

Once at the plaza we went to exchange money, to the pharmacy, and grocery shopping. Maggie, Andrea and me got a cart full of food to cook many of the recipes will be completely from scratch with fresh vegetables! Very excited! We didn't the veggies there because you can buy them fresh here at our home in Huancane. After shopping we ate at a very nice resteraunt where I once again got out of my comfort zone and ate a potatoe covered in yellow sauce, soup, and some sorta roast and rice. IT was such a filling meal and was only 9 sols like 3 dollars!

After lunch we had to go back and get on bike taxis to get to the bus station. Tim, Maggie, and me got in an inclosed one this time and rode to the bust stop we were the first ones. We waited several minutes and got to talk to some really cute elementary school boys. They were so sweet and fun we taught them some English and practiced our Spanish.

We finally met up with our team members a few minutes later and rode the van back to Huancane.

Back in Huancane we had an awesome dinner Hamburgers, potato salad, chips, beans cooked by John and Sonia. A treat here in Huancane. After dinner we got to go to New Hope Baptist Church here in Huancane it was awesome. We sang songs in spanish and then they asked us to sing in English. There were about 5 or 6 families there with their beautiful kids. We met in a room about the size of a normal bed room in the states. After praising we had storying with Pastor Ruban storied Acts 13. HE did it in Spanish so it was a little harder (a lot) harder to follow for me. But awesome to see the church so into it. The story the church in Antioch lays hands and prays for Saual and Barnabus so after storying they prayed over us as we kneeled in the middle and they layed hands and prayed. It was powerful. After praying we sang more songs in Spanish and it was so beautiful! We then hung out a little while and the kids went crazy when we began taking pictures. These kids are so full of life and joy! Maggie, Andrea, and I are going to work on a training session with the members on how to do a "children's church" so we are pumped about that because the kids are awesome. We also are training because we want them to be able to do it after we leave. Well anyways church was amazing and this was fantastic!

God is moving and working. I am off to sleep now it is 10pm and we are getting up at 4am to hike the Mountain and see the sun rise!

I will post the story about the hike maybe tomorrow or sometime soon but have to go now! Love y'all so much and thanks for the prayers!
